A photo of a Daily Times newspaper containing the salaries of government officials in 1979 has been discovered.

The photo lists the amounts received by the President, House of Representatives, Senators and Governors.

45 years ago, the President was reported to have received N50,000 as his annual salary. The Vice President also took home N30,000. The Senate President, Speaker and Ministers received N22,000, N20,000, and N16, 000 as annual pay respectively.

At that time, the exchange rate was $1 equivalent to N0.60. This means that the President of Nigeria in 1979, earned the dollar equivalent of $6,944 or N10,312,500.00 in today's value as monthly salary at the current exchange rate of N1,485/$1.

It has been alleged that members of the National Assembly currently receive between N29million and N37million per month as a salary.

This photo has surfaced as the Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday, June 3, 2024, embarked on a nationwide strike to push the government to increase the minimum wage.

The NLC is demanding that the government increase the wage to N494,000 from the current N60,000.

The two parties are currently negotiating the increment as workers have stopped working, affecting the country’s operations.
