NFF discloses contract duration, target for next Super Eagles coach - Report

The vacancy for the Super Eagles coaching position remains a prominent topic within the Nigerian football community, particularly with the upcoming crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match against South Africa looming.

Reports suggest that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee are split on selecting the ideal candidate for the national team coach role.

A faction is reported to be advocating for the appointment of a foreign manager, while the other is in favour of selecting a local coach.

However, amid this divide, there seems to be a consensus within the committee regarding the targets and contract duration that will be offered to the next coach of the Super Eagles.

According to a report from Owngoal Nigeria, the football federation plans to extend a two-year contract to the next coach of the Super Eagles, with the immediate goals of securing qualifications for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria recently reached the final of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, and are aiming to go one better than they achieved under Jose Peseiro. The West African nation also failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The report also notes that the NFF intends to offer the next manager a salary of $50,000, which is lower than the $80,000 offered to coach Peseiro during the unsuccessful contract negotiations.

While the identity of the next Super Eagles coach remains unknown, there are strong indications, according to swirling reports, that an indigenous manager is likely to be appointed.
